Where do N-numbers come from?

Transcript:

Aircraft receive an N-Number when they are first registered with the FAA, either an owner’s specially requested N-Number or a random one. Most already have an N-Number by the time they are sold by the manufacturer. Similar to a car license plate, you can request a personalized N-Number known as a special registration number. To do so, check on the FAA’s website that the number is available and make a written request to the FAA to reserve it. Include in the letter a $10 reservation fee. N-Numbers are no more than 5 characters ignoring the initial N, start with numbers, and can have up to 2 letters at the end.
